Insightful Books About Careers and Purpose

REPACKING YOUR BAGS: Lighten Your Load for the Rest of Your Life
by Richard J. Leider/David A. Shairo
Richard Leider's first book The Power of Purpose is still a classic. He followed it up with a number of other
books, one of which is this one. This is aimed at those who have already walked down at least one career
path and maybe are in need of something new. The metaphor of unpacking and lightening the load to
make room for something new will resonate with many.

WHEN GENERATIONS COLLIDE  Who They Are. Why They Clash.
How to Solve the Generational Puzzle at Work
by Lynne C. Lancaster and David Stillman
A discussion of four different generations now in the workplace and how differently they see the world
and set their expectations. Lost of insight for supervisors, managers, and HR leaders trying to attract,
manage, retain, and reward different generations and maximize their potential. For those familiar with
Spiral Dynamics, you will see some consistency with that model, although the authors are writing from
their own research and experience. A practical  hands-on book. Lynne (a baby boomer and delightful
friend) and David ( a Gen-Xer whom I do not know) offer fun and useful insights into their own
occasional collisions as well.

THE LIFE YOU WERE BORN TO LIVE A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose by Dan Millman
Millman looks at life purpose from a number of angles - core issues related to health; relationships,
and talent, work and finances. Then he offers guidelines and useful questions as well as supplemental
material on the spiritual laws most relevant to your path. He bases this on numerology of which I
am not a student. Regardless of how he gets to his paths for each person, I have to admit that mine
fits me and those that I know who have used this have also felt a "fit." It's good food for thought.
As with all tools like this, there isn't a one and only way to interpret and apply it to yourself. What
is useful is the journey it takes you on.
